Ampersat is a slashy, RPG-y shooter that mixes old-school/retro and modern sensibilities. A
mix of influences from Gauntlet and Smash TV to Zelda and a dash of
Angband, this is a craft adventure with plenty of appeal for Roguelites
fans. A labor of love from
a solo developer, Ampersat distills some of childhood's favorite gaming
experiences into a fresh and fun hybrid that sees you slaying lots of
monsters, finding lots of loot, unleashing captured letters (um, what?)
and growing from a world-weary warrior mage into a mighty smash/fly

You can notice that the main character and the enemies are ASCII letters. Yes,
this is an aesthetic throwback to the original Rogue games, and
combining these with colorful top-down 3D environments was the idea that
spawned Ampersat. Similarly,
sound effects from the Commodore 64 SID chip are used in conjunction
with real-world music for a distinctive experience. But what is an "ampersat"? It's the prime candidate for the official name of the @ symbol, of course!
